PROGRAM STRUCTURE AND SUBJECTS

For managers with the ambition to challenge for greater responsibility and more senior positions, the Melbourne Business School Executive MBA provides the right opportunity to take their career to the next stage.

MBS recognises the difficulty of finding the time to gain the capabilities necessary to perform at an executive level. It is undoubtedly difficult to make the space to complete a world-class graduate degree in business and management.

Conventional full-time and part-time study arrangements do not suit many managers. The Executive MBA program is designed to address the challenges of top-level study commitment for such people.

Students undertake the program on 17 weekends, from Thursday to Sunday, plus one week-long overseas module, over 18 months. The program is fully residential, thereby enabling a complete focus on study and progress, free from the interruptions of work life.

The Global Business module requires participants to spend one week in China; this is scheduled for January, when it is relatively easier for most managers to take some time away from their work schedule.

The Executive MBA program comprises 18 subjects, made up of 12 core subjects and 6 specialist electives.

The program also features a number of highly-distinctive executive-level EMBA Seminars, Executive Skills Workshops, visiting speakers and an overseas module focusing on international trade and global strategy.

The approach to teaching and learning on the Executive MBA program is purposefully aligned to the experiences, strengths and demands of the class. At this level of study, participants require a pedagogy that features enquiry-based learning, complex case studies, applied problem-solving and action learning projects. While the competitive spirit is observed in setting the highest standards, it is balanced by the collaborative learning within syndicates and project teams which leverages the insights and knowledge of professionals from diverse functions and sectors.

Leading edge technologies are deployed for the most effective and engaging learning experience. Utilising the most advanced hardware and software platforms in educational technology, faculty and students will share an integrated, interactive learning environment. The co-created experience provides an outcome appropriate to the cohort's needs, and in keeping with the School's reputation for scholarly excellence. While online technologies are used in preparatory and assessment activities, the central learning approach emphasises the direct sharing of ideas between faculty and students.

APPLICATION PROCESS AND DEADLINES

Applications to the Executive MBA Program are highly competitive. Meeting minimum entry criteria does not guarantee an offer to the program. Applications to the Executive MBA are assessed in Rounds with specified dates listed below. For an application to be considered complete, candidates must provide a submitted online application at www.mbs.edu/apply with:

1. Completed Personal Statement Questions

2. Detailed CV indicating a minimum of five years’ management experience gained after graduating from an undergraduate degree. This experience can be in any organisation or industry, but the track record should show continuous professional progression or development

3. Certified copies of transcripts* - subjects completed with marks achieved and proof of completion

4. Certified copy of proof of citizenship* e.g. copy of passport

5. Two Referee Reports – please note that it is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that referee reports are submitted prior to the application deadline. Applications submitted on time without the corresponding referee reports will still be considered incomplete.

Applications submitted after the 'Application Due' date will be considered during the next round.

Interviews
After reviewing applications to the Executive MBA Program, the Selection Committee will request that applicants participate in an interview to obtain further information to assist in the selection process. The interview will generally be conducted in person by a member of the Selection Committee. However, telephone interviews may be suitable. Applicants should note that the interview is a formal assessable component of the application process. Not all applicants will be invited to interview.

The Selection Committee reserves the right to request further information from applicants, if required, before making a final decision.

* Please ensure copies of transcripts and passport are correctly certified. Most applicants simply have photocopies of the original documents certified by a lawyer, pharmacist, doctor, police officer or Justice of the Peace. All this involves is having any of these parties sighting both the original copy and the photocopy of the original document at the same time, and ensuring that the photocopy is an exact copy of the original. The photocopy is then stamped and signed by the appropriate authority to confirm that it is an exact copy of the original document.

Unsuccessful Applications
Unsuccessful applications will not be reassessed in following rounds. The School appreciates that considerable time and effort are required to apply for a place in the program and that it is disappointing to submit an unsuccessful application. However, the School regrets that it is not able to comment on specific factors that may have led to the final decision of the Selection Committee.

The Australian Government's FEE-HELP Scheme is an initiative designed to assist Australian citizens undertaking postgraduate coursework degrees, including the Executive MBA. If eligible, you may use FEE-HELP to cover only the tuition component of the fees. Repayments are then deducted from your taxable income by the ATO. Discounted upfront and lump sum repayments are also permitted. Please refer to the website below for additional information regarding limits on FEE-HELP as this will vary from year to year.

Please note: FEE-HELP is only available to Australian citizens.

Self-financing
Students who pay their own fees are often able to claim tuition expenses as a self-study tax deduction, provided the degree is relevant to their job. Students should check with their financial advisor whether this is possible in their situation.

Company sponsorship
Executive MBA students can be completely or partially company-sponsored and funded. We would be happy to talk to employers about the benefits of the Executive MBA for their staff and to facilitate the company sponsorship process. We can also provide prospective students with a business case to share with their employer outlining the benefits of supporting participation in the program.

Scholarships
A small number of partial scholarships are available for the Executive MBA program, particularly for applicants from those groups under-represented in the program, and who can demonstrate the value they would bring to the class. As a guide, these scholarships generally range from AUS$10,000 to AUS$15,000. There is no separate application required for scholarship consideration - those who wish to be considered for a scholarship simply need to enter this information when completing their on-line Executive MBA application. The Executive MBA Selection Committee will review all requests and scholarships will be granted based on merit.

Beyond this, the organisation of any other funds i.e. external scholarships, loans, etc is the responsibility of the student. The University of Melbourne's Financial Aid website provides information on some options for student loans and grants.
