ANZ & MBS honour Charles Goode

Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Limited (ANZ) announced this week that they will sponsor annually the signature event of the Melbourne Business School to honour Charles Goode AC who retires after 15 years as the ANZ Chairman at the end of February 2010.
The Charles Goode Oration presented by the Guest Speaker at the MBS Annual Alumni Dinner is a fitting tribute to a man who has played an extraordinary role in the business of Australia and who has contributed significantly to a wide range of organizations including Melbourne Business School. The dinner is a glittering black tie affair attended by Australia's top business people, many of whom are alumni of the school. This year's event will be held on 4th October at the Melbourne Convention Centre.
ANZ is a founding donor member of MBS, having contributed generously to the Sir Ian McLennan Library, the ANZ Chair of Strategic Marketing and the John Gough Chair for the Practice of International Trade. Charles Goode has given freely of his time and wisdom to MBS over many years. He was a member of the Investment Committee of the MBS (then GSM) Foundation from 1987 - 1993 and a director of MBS Foundation Ltd. from 1993 - 2002.
In 2006 he was awarded the Melbourne Business School Award for his significant contribution to business and management in Australia.
Charles Goode was born in Melbourne in 1938. He was educated at Scotch College, where he was Dux in 1956, and the University of Melbourne, where he graduated in 1960 with the degree of Bachelor of Commerce with Honours and First Place in the Faculty of Commerce. He was awarded a Master of Business Administration by Columbia University, New York in 1963. He is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
In 1961, Charles Goode joined Australia's leading stockbroking firm, Ian Potter & Co., where he was destined to play an important role in the securities industry over a period spanning almost 30 years. He became a Partner in 1969, Senior Partner in 1980 and, in 1986, on the firm's incorporation as Potter Partners, he became Chairman and Chief Executive, a post he held until 1989 when the company was acquired by a British merchant bank. He was a member of the Stock Exchange of Melbourne from 1968 to 1993.
In 1964, at age 24, Charles Goode entered an investment competition run by the Financial Review newspaper. From 20,000 international entries, he won first prize of £1,000. His portfolio of only five stocks showed a gain of £12,628 - a rise of 126 percent - on the original £10,000 investment.
Charles Goode has given long service to leading commercial organizations over many years. He was Chairman of ANZ, Woodside Petroleum, Australian United Investment Company, Diversified United Investment Limited and the Ian Potter Foundation. At various times he has held directorships of CSR, Singapore Airlines, Pacific Dunlop, Legal & General Assurance, Oliver Nilsen Australia and Queensland Investment Corporation and the Howard Florey Institute of Medical Research, of which he was President for seven years.
A wide range of community organizations, particularly in the fields of health and medical research, have benefited from Charles Goode's involvement. He has held board and committee appointments at the Austin Hospital, the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, the Peter MacCallum Cancer Institute, the Anti-Cancer Council of Victoria, the Australian Ballet School, the State Library of Victoria and the Library of the Supreme Court of Victoria. He has served as a member of Council of Monash University, board member of its Centre for Molecular Biology and Medicine and he is a former member of the Finance Committee of the Australian Academy of Science.
In 2001 he was appointed a Companion in the General Division of the Order of Australia for service to business, particularly through major achievements in the area of finance, for guidance in his position on the Boards of charitable and health-related organizations, and for outstanding direction of philanthropic policy in the community.
