Weather & clothing

Australia is a vast country and has a range of climatic zones. Melbourne has a temperate climate although the weather in Melbourne is known for having ‘four seasons in one day'. Therefore a range of clothes is recommended. For more detailed information about climate and weather please visit the Australian Bureau of Meteorology http://www.bom.gov.au/.

Image Karen-Clarence-beach.jpgSummer (December to February) temperatures are usually between 14°C (57°F) during the night and 30°C (86°F) during the day. Summer heat is dry rather than humid and temperatures of 35°C (95°F) are not uncommon.

Winter (June to August) can be cold, wet and windy, with daytime temperatures between 10-15°C (50-59°F). At night the temperature ranges between 4-9°C (40-48°F). It is rare for temperatures to go below freezing and snow in Melbourne is not common.

Autumn (March to May) and spring (September to November) are milder. Days are usually sunny and nights are cooler.

Australians are generally relaxed when it comes to clothing but do dress up for important occasions or when going out at night. For day-to-day business school attire casual clothing is sufficient. However do bring a suit for interview, dinners and for meeting business associates or guests. You may also want to bring formal clothing for our annual ball and native clothing for our diversity celebration events.

Both price and quality of clothing bought in Melbourne can vary greatly. It is possible to spend a great deal on designer clothes, as well as to find many bargains.

You will need clothing for both summer temperatures and cold, wet winter days. Invest in a good, warm coat and a scarf.
