Associate Professor - Marketing

Dr Patrick Butler is an experienced academic, researcher and consultant whose professional expertise includes marketing thinking and practice in non-commercial contexts. His research has focused on marketing strategy, e-business, politics and public sector management issues, and has been published in many international books and journals.

Before joining Melbourne Business School, Patrick lectured at Trinity College Dublin and at the University of Ulster, Northern Ireland. He has been a Visiting Professor at Senshu University, Tokyo, and has taught and presented in both Europe and the USA. He has also worked on marketing development projects with EU and UN organisations in Russia and Africa

Patrick has consulting and executive development experience in several sectors including commercial banking, healthcare, food production and government departments. He has worked with client organisations in Ireland, Denmark, Poland and Switzerland. Among the kinds of projects he leads are business planning, assessments of service programs, market research, new product evaluations and management development seminars and workshops.

Associate Professor - Marketing

Mark Ritson began his career as an Assistant Professor of Marketing at the Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota and then went on to join the London Business School in 1999. Professor Ritson was among the highest rated instructors at LBS and taught both the Marketing 'core' of the MBA program and Brand Management, his specialist area. In 2002 he was awarded the Best Teacher Prize at LBS.

Mark's research focuses on marketing communication and branding. In 1995 he was awarded the Best Paper prize by the European Marketing Academy for his work on Advertising Literacy. He was also the recipient of the 2000 Robert Ferber Award, one of the most prestigious awards in marketing, for his article "The Social Uses of Advertising". He writes a weekly column for Marketing, the UK's leading trade magazine, and is currently shortlisted for the PPA Columnist of the Year award.

Mark also works extensively as a consultant on branding and marketing for some of the world's leading organisations. His clients include McKinsey, Roche, HSBC, Zenith Optimedia, adidas, Ogilvy, 3M, Bacardi Martini and Deutsche Bank. For the last three years he has been the brand consultant for LVMH in Paris and London.

Associate Professor - Marketing and Behavioural Science

Brian Gibbs researches and teaches primarily within the field of consumer behaviour. He is particularly interested in the psychology of utility, and in how tastes and preferences can be strategically managed by the self and others.

Brian's academic expertise is considerable, and he has developed and taught courses on consumer behaviour, marketing management, marketing strategy and behavioural decision making. He is also published within the leading journals in his field, and has presented his work at universities within Australia, New Zealand, North America and Europe.

Before joining MBS, Brian was on faculty in the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University and in the Owen Graduate School of Management at Vanderbilt University. Additionally, he has served as a visiting associate professor in the Sloan School of Management at MIT.

Beyond the academic sphere, Brian has significant consulting experience, and has worked on behalf of clients including the English High Court of Justice and TDK Electronics Corp.
