Our approach to learning

Syndicates
Our programs use syndicate groups for learning purposes. A syndicate is a group of students from various backgrounds who are assigned to work together on material covered in a particular subject. Syndicates work on tasks such as preparing cases for discussion in class or completing assignments based on current issues in organisations. By working in syndicates, students undertake projects that draw on the varied skills and expertise of each individual in their group.

Case studies
The case study method of management learning, common in the world’s leading business schools, is central to the Melbourne Business School experience. The cases draw upon the experiences of organisations operating locally and internationally. To support this approach, teaching staff have access to over 350 case studies which have been developed at Melbourne Business School. Our case study library also holds cases produced by other leading business schools, including a large collection of Harvard Business School cases. Cases reflect the private, public and not-for-profit sectors.

Assessment
Our programs have high academic standards, and all subjects have a variety of assessment tasks. While requirements vary, each subject is generally assessed using a combination of individual and group assignments, in-class tests, class participation and formal examinations.

Industry consulting projects
Students are given access to organisations through industry projects that are assessment tasks in their coursework. Ranging in duration from six weeks to three months, these projects provide an invaluable opportunity for students to be exposed to organisations with complex
innovation issues.

Melbourne University Entrepreneurs’ Challenge
Innovation students are encouraged to participate in the Melbourne University Entrepreneurs’ Challenge (MUEC), an annual business plan competition sponsored by Melbourne Business School and Melbourne Ventures Pty Ltd, the commercialisation arm of the University of Melbourne. The competition provides entrants with valuable experience in new venture creation and business planning. It includes education, mentoring and feedback from leading entrepreneurs, investors and business professionals. The winners receive cash and prizes as well as advice from corporate sponsors on how to take their ideas to market. Further information is available at www.muec.mbs.edu
