Friedmans battle Keynesians in great debate

MBS hosted a debate of epic proportions earlier this month. More than 120 people gathered in the Coles theatre to witness leading figures debate whether "the social responsibility of business is to increase its profits".

The packed house revealed that many were keen to discover the answer.

The affirmative side comprised Tim Wilson, Director, Institute of Public Affairs, Terry McCrann, Journalist, Herald Sun and Chris Hibbard, Captain, Australian Adults Debating Team.

The negative side comprised Dr. Geoff Lewis, Professor, Melbourne Business School, Dr. Daniel Mulino, Senior Consultant, The Nous Group and Kenneth Davidson, Journalist, The Age.

Jointly presented by the MBS Net Impact and Consulting clubs, the debate discussed myriad of topics including meeting Milton Friedman, child labour and the additional obligations required of business.

"The evening was interesting and entertaining," said Net Impact co-president Gill Cashion. "In (the) spirit of entertainment there was no winner.... although as Net Impact we were biased towards social responsibility!"
